Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation

Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS) is a non-surgical treatment for an overactive bladder. We deliver this treatment at Coastal Women’s Health to change the abnormal pattern of stimulation of the nerves that supply the bladder and pelvic floor.

How Does It Work?

PTNS is administered using a slim needle that we inject into the ankle, right where the tibial nerve is located. After the tibial nerve is stimulated, impulses are sent to nerves in the spine to block abnormal signals from the bladder, hence preventing bladder spasms to stop incontinence.

PTNS requires multiple treatments in order to be effective, which will be discussed during your appointment with Dr. Farag.

Who Can Benefit From PTNS?

This treatment is generally considered when other treatments are not working for you. It may be beneficial for women who:

  • Have an overactive bladder
  • Experience incontinence
  • Want a non-surgical treatment to help improve bladder control
  • Have not improved from other treatments

What to Expect from PTNS Treatment?

  1. Consultation with Dr. Farag and team – a thorough assessment to determine if PTNS is the right treatment for you.
  2. We administer PTNS using the method mentioned above to counteract urinary incontinence.
  3. We continuously administer PTNS in other sessions (as determined in your consultation).
  4. Monitoring and follow-up – we track your progress and recommend additional therapies if needed.
