At Coastal Women’s Health, we offer Hysterosalpingo-Contrast-Sonography (HyCoSy) as part of our fertility and gynaecological services. This advanced ultrasound procedure is used to investigate infertility and provides valuable insight into the health of your uterus and fallopian tubes, thus allowing us to determine the best treatment plan for your individual diagnosis in a safe, non-invasive way.
How Does It Work?
HyCoSy is a specialised ultrasound technique that works by injecting a small amount of fluid (Exem foam contrast solution) into the uterus and monitoring as the fluid travels along the fallopian tubes, hence showcasing any blockages or other abnormalities. This treatment is performed by first inserting a soft plastic catheter inside your cervix, and then using a transvaginal ultrasound as the Exem foam in injected to observe it. This treatment is performed between days 6 to 12 of your typical menstrual cycle.
Who Can Benefit From HyCoSy?
HyCoSy may be beneficial for women who:
- Are having difficulty conceiving
- Want to investigate the cause of their infertility
- Want to check their fallopian tubes for blockages
- Want to assess any abnormalities of their uterus
- Are experiencing symptoms such as pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, or suspected uterine issues
What to Expect from HyCoSy Treatment?
- Consultation with Dr. Farag and team – a thorough assessment to determine if HyCoSy is the right treatment for you.
- On the day, a transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasound scan may be required immediately before the procedure – you will be informed at the time if this is the case.
- You will need to empty your bladder before the treatment begins.
- Lasting approximately 45-60 minutes, Dr. Farag will perform the procedure as outlined above. He will inform you of the procedure as it is happening.
- There may be some slight discomfort and cramping, similar to that of period cramps, but this usually resolves quickly. We recommend taking 2 tablets of anti-inflammatory medication an hour before the appointment to minimise discomfort and relax the uterus.
- Dark discharge will be expected for a short period of time due to the Betadine antiseptic used.
Dr. Farag will assess the results of the procedure and promptly inform you of the outcome. If you require further treatment, Dr. Farag will walk you through your options to help you achieve your goals.
